OBC Subsection 3.1.8.

Closure in a 30 minute fire separation:

Sentence 3.3.2.2.(7) of the OBC states:

In elementary and secondary schools, where the occupant load of a room exceeds 200 persons, the room shall be separated from the remainder of the building by a fire separation having a fire-resistance rating of not less than
  1. 1h where the building is not sprinklered, or
  2. 30 min where the building is sprinklered.

In the case of a sprinklered building, the fire separation must have a minimum 30 minute fire-resistance rating.

Where a closure is installed in a fire separation required to have a fire-resistance rating of 30 min., the closure is not required to have a fire-protection rating. Articles 3.1.8.11 and 3.1.8.13 require self-closing devices and latches for doors used as closures in such fire separations. Wired glass and glass block conforming to Article 3.1.8.14 may be included in these types of fire separations.
