BRANCH OPINION

Exposing building face applications - Ontario Building Code (OBC), Subsection 9.10.14.

It is the opinion of the Housing Development & Buildings Branch that, the limiting distance is only applicable to the side of a bay window where such a bay window is forming part of a floor area. Therefore, the adjacent spatial separation requirement will not apply to the side of a bay window which does not contain a floor area since there will be no increase in terms of fire load for such a condition, and the side of such an opening is not being considered as an exterior wall. This is based on the fact that, floor area means the space on any storey of a building between exterior walls and required firewalls including the space occupied by interior walls and partitions, but not including exits, vertical service spaces, and their enclosing assemblies.
