BRANCH OPINION

RE: SENTENCE 9.7.1.3.(1) BEDROOM WINDOWS

USE OF A DOOR IN LIEU OF AN "ESCAPE" WINDOW IN DWELLINGS

This is an interpretation as to whether a means of egress may be used in lieu of the window requirements in the above referenced sentence.

Question.

Can a door be used in lieu of the openable window requirements, as found in Article 9.7.1.3., for floor levels containing bedrooms?

Answer.

YES, as long as the door is a Code complying door and that this door is in addition to other required means of egress.

An exterior door on the floor level requiring the "escape" window may be considered as being equivalent to the window described in Sentence 9.7.1.3.(1) of the Code.

To extend this interpretation to include a shared egress facility which is provided in addition to the required means of egress would have to be evaluated on a case by case basis.
