BRANCH OPINION

RE: APPLICATION OF MAKE-UP AIR IN A "TYPE I" DWELLING UNIT ONTARIO BUILDING CODE (OBC), ARTICLE 9.32.3.6.

According to Sentence 9.32.3.6.(2) of the OBC, a ventilation supply inlet is not required in a Type I dwelling unit. Therefore, a 700 CFM kitchen hood exhaust fan does not require make-up air. However, in areas where soil gas is known as a problem, a make-up air supply is recommended to be installed as indicated in Sentence 9.32.3.8.(1) of the OBC. Although the OBC does not regulate a maximum allowable air volume which a single exhaust fan may require make-up air to be provided, a depressurization test can determine if one is needed.
