BRANCH OPINION

RE: SAFETY ON STAIRS IN DWELLING UNITS

Open risers are permitted on stairs within dwelling units even though openings in guard(s) on the sides of these stairs are limited to 100 mm.

If you desire to propose a change to these requirements for the next edition of the Ontario Building Code, you may forward a proposed amendment Mr. Walter Burningham of the Code Development Unit of the Housing Development & Buildings Branch.

Your proposed amendment should include the suggested wording to deal with this issue and where this proposal should be included in the Code. Background data on this subject would also be desirable. A standard form for the proposal of a Code amendment is included at the front of the Building Code.

Once the proposal is received and logged, it may be included in the package which will be sent out for public comment prior to the next edition of the Code.
