BRANCH OPINION

Application of combustible piping in non-combustible buildings- Ontario Building Code (OBC), Article 3.1.5.15.

According to Article 3.1.5.15. of the OBC, only combustible tubing for pneumatic controls with an outside diameter not more than 10 mm is considered to be a minor component under Clause 3.1.5.2.(1)(e), all other exposed combustible piping and fittings in a high-rise building must have a flame-spread rating of not more than 25, and a smoke developed classification of not more than 50 (except when concealed in a wall or concrete slab. However, other similar minor components are considered to be acceptable under Clause 3.1.5.2.(1)(h) of the OBC. Therefore, it is the opinion of the Housing Development & Buildings Branch that, combustible piping which forms part of a venting system for the HWT, and vented directly through an exterior wall to the exterior without penetrating a required fire-separation may be considered as minor components according to Clause 3.1.5.2.(1)(h) of the OBC.
