BRANCH OPINION

Sprinklers in lieu of Roof Rating

The Branch is of the opinion that Article 3.2.2.12. waives the fire-resistance rating of roof assemblies when all the following three conditions are satisfied:

  1. The building is protected by an automatic sprinkler system which has been designed, constructed, installed and tested in conformance with NFPA 13-1991, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems".

  2. The sprinkler system provided is electrically supervised to indicate a trouble signal on the building annunciator when any one or more of the seven conditions as described in Sentence 3.2.4.16.(5) occur.

  3. A signal is transmitted to the fire department by way of any one of the three systems listed under Sentence 3.2.4.7.(3) upon operation of the sprinkler system, i.e., detection of a flow of water in the sprinkler system.
