Clause 3.2.9.1.(1)(b) of the 1990 OBC required a standpipe and hose system in every BASEMENT of a building that:
The 1993 edition of the OBC made changes to this clause. The changes were intended to be editorial. However, these changes could be interpreted to mean that the standpipe system would not only be required in the basement but above grade as well, even where a standpipe would not otherwise be required above grade.
The current wording of the 1993 OBC is an editorial oversight and the Housing Development & Buildings Branch intends to correct this in the next edition of the OBC.
The intent of article 3.2.9.1 is that, in a building not required to have a standpipe and hose system above grade, a standpipe and hose sytem is only required in the BASEMENT of a building containing more than one storey below grade.
